Introduction

Problems with charging the battery? The USB port bent out of shape and unable to plug into the charging cable? It might be time to replace the USB Port.

    • Place the device on the workspace so the screen is facing downward.

    • Using the t5 screwdriver from the iFixit Pro Tool Kit, remove all four 5.6mm screws placing them safely on the table.

    • Grab a spudger from tool kit.

    • Pry open sides of Nuvi gently with spudger (do not rip apart).

    • Use plastic opening tool to pry ribbon slowly from white plastic bar.

    • Separate the two pieces and place them on the table

The ribbon connector is held in place by a white plastic bar that snaps in place. It will pop up when lightly pried from the ribbon side as shown in the photo (the pivot action is on the connector side). Putting it back together is tricky. The ribbon cable has to lie flat in the connector as far back as possible; once this is true then snap the lever flat against the cable and lock it in place.  You might feel a very subtle snap sensation.

I simply can't make this work.

I replaced the battery in my Garmin 2595 and I couldn't get the screen to light up. I called Garmin for assistance and was told that my Garmin's battery could not be replaced and because I broke the seal in the back there was nothing that could be done to correct my problem. Meaning when this Garmin's battery goes bad, you must throw the unit away!!! I tried to explain there are all kinds of videos showing how to replace the battery, but I was told, none of them were from Garmin so there was nothing they could do for me!!!

Yeah, that ribbon clip is impossible to get back into that slot and locked. I found a proper battery, but the unit is now broken because it won't seat at all.

    • Remove the t5 screwdriver head and replace it with the j000 screwdriver head from the toolkit.

    • Disconnect all the wires from the circuit board.

    • Using the j000 screwdriver, remove all four 5.1mm screws from the circuit board and place them safely on the table (separate from the case ones)

    • Gently pry circuit board from the bottom shell and place it gently on the work surface

    • Gently and delicately heat up the solder holding the USB port to the circuit board.

    • Carefully remove the USB Port using the metal tweezers from the toolkit.

    • Place the old USB Port on a protected work surface that won’t light on fire.

A few comments on separating the screen cables from the main unit would be helpful.. This is not obvious after prying the two components apart.

    • Grab the replacement USB port with the metal tweezers from the toolkit.

    • Grab the solder and place it on the location of the previous USB port.

    • Place the replacement port and place it over the solder.

    • While holding the USB port in place with the tweezers, use the soldering iron to heat up the solder underneath the port.

    • Let the port cool for an hour.

Please send me manufacture part number of USB port and where I can buy that. I am from Canada. Mohan

The part for sale on eBay and the one in the pictures are not the same connector. If you want to read more about this problem try this link:

The link points to a different kind of connector, while it's not 3 pin (the two additional pins are a bit in behind the row of 3 pins) it's wrong and won't work.

However I did not need a new connector, just solder back the current connector and it now works fine (until next time).

One thing that isn't to clear is that the battery and speaker wires are pulled straight up from the board, not sideways in the connector as I first thought.
