General
Calipers are precision measuring instruments used to measure the distance between two opposite sides of an object. They consist of two adjustable legs or jaws, one fixed and one movable, which can be adjusted to fit around the object being measured. Calipers are widely used in fields where accurate measurements are critical, such as engineering, machining, metalworking, woodworking, medicine, and scientific research.
There are several types of calipers, each suited for different purposes:
- Vernier Calipers: These are the most common type and consist of a main scale and a sliding Vernier scale. They can measure both internal and external dimensions accurately.
- Dial Calipers: Similar to Vernier calipers but with a dial gauge instead of a Vernier scale, which provides a direct reading of the measurement. Dial calipers are easier to read for some users.
- Digital Calipers: These use an electronic digital display to provide a direct digital reading of the measurement. They are easy to read and can switch between metric and imperial units.
- Inside Calipers: Used to exclusively measure the inner diameter of an object. They have curved legs that expand or contract to fit inside the object being measured.
- Outside Calipers: Used to exclusively measure the outer diameter of an object. They have straight legs that adjust to fit around the outside of the object.
- Divider Calipers: These are used to mark distances or transfer measurements. They have two sharp legs that can be adjusted and locked in place.
- Height Calipers: Also known as Vernier height gauges, these are used to measure the height of objects or to set heights on machines in manufacturing environments.
- Depth Calipers: Used to measure the depth of holes, slots, or other recesses. They have a blade-like extension that can be inserted into the opening to take the measurement.
