Background

The Wacom Intuos4 was released 2009 as part of a long line of Wacom drawing tablets. During this time, Intuos was a strictly professional model. The touch ring was an innovation of the Intuos4, replacing the touch strips used in the Intuos4, and saw enough success that it has been present in all future professional Intuos releases. It features a larger drawing area on some editions, and doubles the pressure sensitivity of previous models.

The Intuos has since diverged into professional and standard consumer models. Following the release of the Intuos5 in 2011 is the Intuos Pro, released in 2019, continuing this lineage of professional grade hardware under the Intuos name. The Intuos S is a split from the historical brand, catering towards more standard consumer markets.

Identification

The Wacom Intuos4 is a drawing tablet, encased in black plastic. The model code is PTK-640 and the serial number is 0IAT003809, these should be visible somewhere on the back of the device or on the packaging. In case this can't be found, it can be distinguished from earlier Intuos models and the Intuos S by its usage of 8 express keys and one touch ring on the left side of the pad. The right side of the pad has a wide screen bezel with two LEDs on the right side. The bezel on the right side is as wide as the one on the left where the buttons are located, distinguishing it from the Intuos 5 and Pro. The north and south of the case feature a vertical curve, meaning the front facing surface of the case is not flat. The corners of the case are sharp, forming a perfect rectangle. There is a Wacom badge south of the buttons.
