Background and Identification
While Intensive Care Unit (ICU) can refer to a department of a hospital or the healthcare professionals that work there, this page will cover the devices they use, which integrate several other medical devices into a singular unit capable of dealing with most issues a critical patient might have. Portable ICUs typically contain a patient monitor, a ventilator, several intravenous tubes, feeding tubes, suction pumps, catheters, a syringe pump, and some of the more common drugs used to treat a trauma or post-surgery patient. These are all contained on a single unit with a set of wheels, so the patient can remain hooked up to the device while in transit around the hospital.
