Background and Identification
Released in October 2012, the second generation of the Nest Learning Thermostat started as a Kickstarter project before gaining enough support to be sold at major nationwide retailers. Unlike other programmable thermostats, which rely on the operator to program every aspect of the unit's temperature controls, the Nest remembers setpoints and trends to adapt to a certain household's schedule. It states that the thermostat will program itself within a week. The Nest includes an auto-away function that senses when the home is empty, as well as a remote control allowing temperature to be changed from a smart phone or laptop. Compatible with most common HVAC systems, Nest Laboratories claims that its Learning Thermostat can pay for itself in energy savings after a single year. To identify whether you have a 1st or 2nd generation Nest, look at the outer steel ring. If your Nest is from the 1st generation, the outer ring will be be two pieces, where as the 2nd generation has a solid steel ring. The internals have also been changed to increase compatibility with more homes. The easiest identifier is the green level. All customers have access to new software updates, including the new 3.0 software featured in the 2nd generation. The Nest Learning Thermostat was awarded the Red Dot Design Award for the last two consecutive years. It was also nominated for a Design and Art Direction (D&AD) Award, for its optimized design form.
The updated Nest Thermostat is now .14" thinner and encased by a premium solid stainless steel ring. The 2nd generation 3.0 software has more language capabilities, and additional added features include System Match, Early-On, Filter Reminders, Heat Pump Balance, and True Radiant technologies. It is compatible with 95% of low voltage heating and cooling systems, including 2nd stage cooling, 3rd stage heating, dual fuel, emergency heat, and whole-home humidifiers and dehumidifiers. The 2nd generation in now compatible with android tablets, Nexus 7, and Kindle Fire.
