Background and Identification
The Dell Dimension 2400 is a desktop computer released in 2003. It has a traditional boxy “tower” shape with a black and gray exterior. It shipped with Windows XP Home installed. You can find the circular Dell logo on the front of the case and imprinted on the sides as well. The top section of the front panel has room for two 5.25-inch drives (like an optical disc reader) and a 3.5-inch floppy drive while the bottom section has two USB 2.0 ports and a headphone jack for easy access. The power button is located roughly in the center.
The Dimension 2400 was sold with a 19-inch CRT monitor, but it will work with any monitor that can accept a VGA input. Simply hook the monitor up to the video output port on the back panel of the case. Speaking of which, other ports nearby include classics like a parallel port, serial port, and PS/2 ports along with newer connectors like four USB 2.0 ports and an Ethernet jack. If you need to replace any components inside, they are all accessible behind the cover on the left side of the case. Additionally, you can use the three PCI slots on the motherboard to add extra ports or functionality to the machine. The Dell Dimension 2400 shipped with a PCI Modem card already installed in the topmost PCI slot.
You can identify this computer by looking for an information sticker containing the model number “Dimension 2400.” This sticker is usually located on the back panel (this seems to be the most likely for the Dimension 2400), side panel, or bottom of the case. The words "Dimension 2400" are also oriented in a circular pattern around the power button on the front panel.
The motherboard does not detect USB input while booting, instead only responding to PS/2 peripherals. As a result, users need a PS/2 keyboard in order to access BIOS on boot.
