Background and Identification
First manufactured in 1980, Casio electronic keyboards are still made by Casio today. Electronic keyboards or portable keyboards are a musical instrument—electronic or digital derivatives of keyboard instruments.
Major components of a typical modern electrical keyboard:
- Musical keyboard: The white and black piano style keys
- User Interface system: a program which handles user interaction with controllers such as the musical keyboard, menus, and buttons.
- Computerized musical arranger: A software program that produces rhythms and chords through computerized commands.
- Sound generator: A digital sound module, usually within an integrated read-only memory (ROM)
- Amplifier and speakers: Internal audio power amplifier (a few watts) connected to the sound generator chip
- Power supply: Keyboards may or may not have an internal power supply system built to the main circuit board, but most modern keyboards are often equipped with an included AC adapter.
- MIDI Terminals: Most keyboards usually have 5-pin MIDI connections for data communication so keyboard can connect with either a computer or a sound module
- Flash memory: some keyboards have a small amount of onboard memory for storing MIDI data or recorded songs
- External storage device: Usually available for professional-grade keyboards and synthesizers, allowing the user to store data in an externally connected storage device such as ROM cartridges, floppy disks, memory cards, and USB flash drives
- Music stands: A metal or plastic rack for holding sheet music or music books upright
- Sustain jack: (if keyboard has sustain feature) replicates the device used on acoustic pianos.
