Background Information
Boston Dynamics' Spot represents a significant advancement in robotic technology, providing users with a robust and adaptable platform for a wide range of tasks. Spot was revealed on June 23, 2016, and became commercially available in 2019 for the price of $74,500 with the aim of automating data collection and inspection processes.
Spot features advanced mobility, an intuitive control system, and the ability to carry various sensors and can utilize equipment via a Payload Port system on its back.
This robot is intended to be used in industries such as construction, oil and gas, power and utilities, and public safety, where it can navigate complex terrains, avoid obstacles, and perform autonomous missions while in hazardous conditions.
Users can also develop their own attachable payload via Spot's Official SDK, and can extend Spot's functionality beyond the standard features. Such examples include a robotic arm, an acoustic imaging system, and in at least one instance a beer distribution system.
