Background and Additional Information
The term BiPAP (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure) is technically a trade/brand name owned by (Philips) Respironics, but it’s often used colloquially to refer to broadly similar NIV (non-invasive ventilation) devices. A BiPAP differs from other NIVs like a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) in that it modulates the pressure applied to the patient’s lungs to adjust for inhalation and exhalation, using a lower pressure for the latter to allow for easier evacuation of the lungs.
