Background and Identification
Altec Lansing, Inc. is an American audio electronics company that primarily produces loudspeakers and associated audio electronics for professional, home, automotive, and multimedia applications. Engineers at Western Electric formed Altec Services Company and developed the technology for motion picture sound that was introduced in 1927. Originally, Altec Services Company serviced theater sound systems that the company’s founders had developed. Altec Services Company purchased the Lansing Manufacturing Company in 1941 and formed the Altec Lansing Corporation.
Popular Altec Lansing loudspeakers include the Altec Lansing Duplex 600-series coaxial loudspeaker, studio monitors between the 1940s and the 1980s, and the Altec “Voice of the Theater” line of loudspeakers widely used in movie theaters, concert halls, and in rock concerts between the 1960s and the 1990s. In the 2000s, Altec Lansing produced a range of Bluetooth speakers, headphones, and earbuds.
Computer speakers, which are also called multimedia speakers, are speakers sold for use with computers. Generally, computer speakers are capable of other audio uses, like playing audio from an MP3 player. Most computer speakers include an internal amplifier and require a power source which may be by a mains power supply via an AC adapter, batteries, or a USB port.
Altec Lansing computer speakers generally include the name “Altec Lansing” in capital letters on the speaker’s front face. Some speakers include the Altec Lansing logo, which includes a rectangle with two curves that meet to form a loose ‘X’ shape.
